Wonderland

My new book, WONDERLAND

Coming Fall 2018

Macmillan/FSG

MAVIS JEETER is fearless and bold, but she has never lived in one place long enough to have a real best friend. Her flighty mother has uprooted them again to another new home and taken a job as a housekeeper for the Tully family. Mavis wants this home to be permanent—which means finding herself a best friend.
ROSE TULLY is a worrier who feels like she doesn’t quite fit in with the other girls in her neighborhood. Her closest friend is Mr. Duffy, but he hasn’t been himself since his dog died. Rose may have to break a few of her mother’s many rules to help Mr. Duffy—and find someone who really understands her.
HENRY has run away from home, but he craves kindness and comfort—and doesn’t know where to look for them.
When Mavis and Rose hatch a scheme to find Mr. Duffy a new dog, their lives and Henry’s intersect—and they all come to find friendship in places they never expected.

Things I Love Thursday

I'm often asked by students which of my books is my favorite.

I used to say I don't have a favorite.

I love them all.

Well, I DO love them all.

But then I decided to 'fess up.

I DO have a favorite.

This one:

Greetings from Nowhere

So that's why I LOVE this news:

It will be published in paperback by Square Fish/Macmillan Books.

Official on-sale date: 8/25/15.

So excited, y'all.

A New Book!

So excited to share this news (from Publishers Weekly Children's Bookshelf):

Janine O'Malley of Farrar, Straus & Giroux has acquired world rights for Wish, a novel by Barbara O'Connor. Eleven-year-old Charlie Reese has made the same wish since fourth grade, hoping that someday it will come true. When her irresponsible parents cause her to be sent to the Blue Ridge Mountains to live with family members she doesn't know, she needs that wish to come true more than ever. Publication is planned for fall 2016; Barbara Markowitz of Barbara Markowitz Literary Agency did the deal.

Big Apple Recap

My recent trip to New York was great (despite my Amtrak train nightmare, which will go unmentioned).

I was meeting up with my agent, Barbara Markowitz, for the first time ever!! We've worked together for 18 years.

Yes, I said 18 years.

Never met.

How did that happen?

But.....we finally did it.

I literally ran from Penn Station to The Algonquin Hotel.

What a perfect spot for a writer to stay! The home of the Round Table, a group of amazing writers who met there for lunch every day to exchange ideas (including, ultimately, founding the New Yorker Magazine). I hope I absorbed some writerly vibes.

The Round Table of writers

Then it was off to the Flatiron Building to meet my great Macmillan/FSG team.

That night, Barbara, Harvey and I had a lovely dinner and toasted ourselves.

We even had cotton candy for dessert!

By the end of day two, Harvey and I were tired.

A grand old time!!

Macmillan made these adorable bookmarks to go along with the copies of The Small Adventure of Popeye and Elvis that schools will be reading as part of the Share Our Books program.

(pssst. There's one more opening for this school year.)
